TOURISM INFORMATICS

We will continue to conduct research on how to incorporate information technology (IT) into the act of tourism in order to improve the transmission and analysis of tourism information and to revitalize the local community.

INFORMATION SCIENCE CONTENT TOURISM

Research Background and Issues

Despite Okhotsk’s strengths in tourism, such as its vast nature, fresh foods, unique climate, and drift ice, Okhotsk is not a final candidate for tourism due to its distance from major metropolitan areas, long travel distances, and transportation problems.
In this project, we will continue to work on the development of a model to enhance the attractiveness of the destination, which will involve the science of how to set up attractiveness mechanisms.

Research Objective

This project aims to contribute to and support Okhotsk tourism through information.

Initiatives to Solve Issues

Attracting new tourist groups

  • Creation of new local tourism resources
  • Stories relevant to the region
  • Call for a community-driven implementation system

Achievements to Date

Focusing on content tourism, we have engaged in various activities to connect the VOCALOID/VOICEROID character “Yuzuki Yukari” and “Okhotsk tourism”. Our laboratory manages the license of “Yuzuki Yukari” and is actively involved in planning and transmitting contents using “Yuzuki Yukari”, creating added value for the information transmitted, collecting and statistically analyzing the reactions, and managing the official website.

Future Perspective

  • To start operation of KCLOSS beta version.
  • Automatic classification and rating of reviews using machine learning
  • Refinement of auto-tweeting and documentation using information extraction technology.

OKHOTSK DATABASE

Research Background and Issues

Despite Okhotsk’s strengths in tourism, such as its vast nature, fresh food, unique climate, and drift ice, Okhotsk is still a candidate for tourism but not a final candidate due to its distance from metropolitan areas, long travel distances, and transportation. In order to solve this problem, this project aims to realize a system to consolidate, analyze, and share information.

Research Objective

This project aims to contribute to and support Okhotsk tourism through information.

Initiatives to Solve Issues

On-demand Information Portal

  • Large-scale data collection and sharing
  • Objective data analysis and utilization
  • Highly interactive information access

Achievements to Date

As a feasibility study for the knowledge sharing infrastructure that this project aims to develop, we have successfully developed the Kitami College Life Support System “KCLOSS” for Kitami Technical University students. In addition, we have conducted a practicality evaluation experiment on KCLOSS using subjects to confirm its practicality and release it to the public on a trial basis.

Future Perspective

  • KCLOSS beta version is now in operation.
  • Automatic classification and rating of reviews using machine learning
  • Refinement of automatic tweet sentence generation using information extraction technology
