Solving real-world problems through information science
TiP Lab (Text Information Processing Laboratory) was established in 2009 at Kitami Institute of Technology. The lab is led by three faculty members: Professor Fumito Masui, Professor Michal Ptaszynski, and Assistant Professor Juuso Eronen.
We apply natural language processing (NLP) and information science to address pressing societal challenges. Our research spans automatic detection of cyberbullying and online harmful content, preservation and computational processing of endangered languages such as Ainu, tourism information analysis for regional revitalization, and data-driven curling strategy and athlete development.
What makes TiP Lab distinctive
International environment. Over 10 nationalities have been represented in the lab, including students from Poland, Turkey, Malaysia, China, Finland, Tanzania, Bangladesh, and India. Both Japanese and English are used as working languages.
Real-world impact. We prioritize deploying our research in practice. Our harmful content detection tools have been adopted by commercial platforms. The ML-Ask sentiment analysis system is released as open source. The iCE curling analytics system is used in competitive settings.
Interdisciplinary reach. Our work spans linguistics, computer science, sports science, and tourism studies, connecting text information processing to diverse application domains.
Career paths of our alumni
Graduates from TiP Lab have gone on to careers in software development, systems engineering, local government, and graduate school. Notable employers include Yahoo Japan, NTT Data, Hitachi, Sharp, and the City of Kitami.
